Everyone has got at least one claim to fame or knows someone who has one. Usually it’s something along the lines of knowing Brad Pitt’s uncle’s dad’s best friend’s auntie’s dog. I think claims to fame are great and some people usually have bizarre stories of how they know someone.
I spent my Easter holidays in Wales and one night I ventured into Barry Island, famous for being the home of the arcade that Gavin and Stacey’s Nessa works in. As a tourist I think Barry Island is great; there’s a beach, some arcades, cafes and cheap restaurants. If Blackpool had a baby brother, Barry Island would be it. I can imagine Welsh citizens would probably have some very different views on the place!
As a huge Gavin and Stacey fan, I loved how each shop and arcade (especially the one that Nessa worked in) had Gavin and Stacey written all over it. The Island Leisure Arcade as well as many of the shops (that weren’t even in any episodes) sold tea towels, mugs, keyrings, posters, sweets, coasters, and t-shirts all with Gavin and Stacey’s faces printed onto them.
Not to mention the signs of the shops, restaurants and arcades had some kind of mention of the popular tv series too. I can imagine they must get a lot of money from tourists and crazy Gavin and Stacey fans (like me!).
I just love how crazy it gets when a celebrity has visited a place or when a place can be seen for a minute in a popular show. I’m definitely not complaining that places like Barry Island have gone quite overboard with the Gavin and Stacey unofficial merchandise but I am complaining about the lack of money I have to buy it all.
